Cal Poly Mustangs @ Stanford Cardinal
Stanford clobbers Cal Poly 79-62
STANFORD, Calif. -- Stefan Nastic scored 20 points and Dwight Powell added 15 more as Stanford muscled its way to a 79-62 win over visiting Cal Poly on Saturday night.
Powell and Nastic gave Stanford (9-3) a big size advantage down low, as the two members of the Cardinal frontcourt paced the team in the first half before a barrage of 3-pointers put the game out of reach. Stanford held a 33-20 lead at intermission and ran away in the second half, as cold-shooting Cal Poly (4-8) went just 35.4 percent from the field on the evening.
Stanford guard Chasson Randle caught fire with a trio of 3-pointers in the second half en route to a 20-point performance. Reserve big man John Gage also chipped in eight points off the bench in the second half to spark the Cardinal, who looked sloppy to start the game.
The teams combined to hit just 6 of 27 shots in the first eight minutes of the contest. Stanford started to work the ball inside and converted nine straight field goals to build a 25-12 advantage. Nastic and Powell also did a fine job of defending the paint, as Cal Poly was forced to hoist ill-advised shots from the outside, especially in the first half.
Cal Poly showed some fight early in the second half, cutting the advantage to 35-24 just minutes after intermission, but Stanford responded with a breakaway 23-11 run. By the time Gage knocked down his shot from behind the arc with 10:43 remaining, Stanford held its biggest lead of the game at 58-35. From that point on, the Cardinal lead floated around 20 points.
The well-rounded Stanford attack also included another double-digit scorer in Josh Huestis, who added 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds. In all, the Cardinal shot 58.1 percent and never lost control of the game after the early hiccups. Forward Chris Eversley led the Cal Poly offense with 25 points, while forward Joel Awich chipped in 11.
Stanford moves on to Thursday's Pac-12 opener against California. The Mustangs still have non-conference dates against Delaware and Hawaii before starting Big West competition on Jan. 11 against University of California-Santa Barbara.
