LAFAYETTE, La. -- Elfrid Payton and Shawn Long combined for 44 points to lead Louisiana-Lafayette past Louisiana College 101-67 Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
Payton was 7 of 13 for 21 points, and made all seven of his free throws. Long was 11 of 17 for 23 points. Both played fewer than 26 minutes.
Eldrige Moore did not miss a shot while scoring 11 points. He was 4-4 from the field and made all three free throws.
Louisiana-Lafayette scored 72 of its points in the paint, and their 101 points were the most since scoring 105 against North Texas last season. The Ragin' Cajuns shot 89.5 percent from the line, their best since playing Boise State last season.
Anthony Gaines Jr. was 8 of 18 for 21 points to lead Louisiana College.
