Old Dominion Monarchs @ VCU Rams
Reddic leads VCU past rival ODU, 69-48
RICHMOND, Va. -- Juvonte Reddic scored eight of his 24 points during a 17-2 second-half run and VCU beat longtime rival Old Dominion for the fourth consecutive time, 69-48, on Sunday.
Reddic made 12 of 16 shots and added 12 rebounds and four blocks for the Rams (8-2), who trailed 41-40 before JeQuan Lewis' basket in the lane sparked the go-ahead burst with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Aaron Bacote and Keenan Palmore scored 13 each for Old Dominion (4-5), which lost its fourth in a row. The Monarchs scored 24 of their first 28 points in the paint until VCU adjusted on defense.
VCU also outrebounded Old Dominion 50-35 and converted its 27 offensive rebounds into 30 points.
Bacote's third 3-pointer had given the Monarchs the 41-40 edge with 12:50 to play before Lewis scored inside and Reddic followed with a dunk and then a putback. A layup by Briante Weber and Lewis' 3 boosted the Rams' lead to 10, and the cold-shooting Monarchs fell further and further behind thereafter.
Old Dominion trailed 34-31 at halftime and had to be delighted. The Monarchs turned the ball over 11 times, mostly because of their own sloppiness, but drove at will. Bacote's late 3-pointer from the right corner was their only one of the half.
The Rams trailed 16-8 before launching a 20-4 run in the middle of the first half. Graham opened and closed the run with 3-pointers and scored 11 in the burst, and Rob Brandenberg also hit a 3-pointer.
The spurts gave VCU a 28-20 lead, but Old Dominion outscored the Rams 11-6 the rest of the half.
