Winthrop tops East Tennessee State 76-66
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Joab Jerome scored 18 points and Winthrop pulled away from East Tennessee State in a 76-66 victory on Tuesday night.
With a double digit lead in the second half, Winthrop (3-1) allowed 15 unanswered points to East Tennessee State (0-4) and the Buccaneers took a 49-48 lead on Rashawn Rembert's 3-pointer.
But Andre Smith responded with a 3-pointer for Winthrop, and the Eagles went on a 14-2 run to open a 62-51 lead. Jerome's 3-pointer with 5:32 left put Winthrop up 68-56, and the Eagles maintained a double-digit advantage from that point forward.
Winthrop shot 49.2 percent from the field (29-59) and made 8-of-17 3-pointers, led by Brandon Vega with three.
James Bourne scored 12 for Winthrop. Keon Johnson had 11 and Smith added 10.
Hunter Harris led East Tennessee State with 18 points. Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard added 16.
Winthrop snapped a nine-game road losing streak with the win.
