CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Jayson Cheesman scored 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and hit the game-winning lay-up with 12 seconds left to give Southern Utah a 73-72 victory over Cal State Northridge in Saturday night's BracketBusters game.
The Matadors had two looks at the basket in the last 4 seconds when Trevone Williams missed a jumper and Stephen Maxwell's offensive rebound put-back missed its mark. Maxwell ended his night with 20 points including an 8 for 8 performance from the free-throw line and had nine rebounds.
Jackson Stevenett was the leading scorer for Southern Utah (11-15) with 21 points, Damon Heuir chipped in with 18 and the Thunderbirds shot 40 percent from the field but were 19 of 23 from the free-throw line.
Southern Utah had lost three straight.
Brandon Perry had 12 points and five rebounds for Cal State Northridge (13-15), which was 23 of 28 from the line.
