CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Trey Sumler netted 25 points as Western Carolina had its highest scoring output against a Division I team this year, topping Chattanooga 90-81 Saturday night.
The Catamounts (8-11, 5-2 Southern Conference) shot 53.4 percent (31 of 58) and made 54.5 percent (12 of 22) from 3-point range. Tom Tankelewicz hit a career-high 7 of 9 3-pointers and finished with 21 points.
Sumler was 10 of 10 at the line and also tied a career high with 12 assists. Brandon Boggs added 19 points and Tawaski King 18.
Z. Mason scored 21 points and Gee McGhee added 19 for the Mocs (8-11, 3-3), who hit just 39.7 percent (25 of 63) of their shots.
Western Carolina closed the first half on a 9-1 run for a 48-39 halftime advantage.
Chattanooga pulled within 70-66 with 7:10 left, but Sumler's 3 and King's two free throws quickly re-established a safe cushion.
