BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Donta Harper netted a career-high 22 points as Gardner-Webb beat NAIA Virginia-Wise 77-58 Monday night.
Harper connected on 8 of 11 from the field and hit 6 of 8 from the free-throw line. The sophomore also pulled down eight rebounds.
Tashan Newsome scored a season-high 18 points, Kevin Hartley hit 4 of 5 from 3-point range to finish with 12 points and eight rebounds and Tyler Strange dished out six assists for the Runnin' Bulldogs (5-4).
Paul Evans scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting for the Cavaliers (1-5).
Virginia-Wise trailed 25-21 with 6:13 left in the first half when a Mike Byron layup sparked a 9-0 Gardner-Webb run, and the Runnin' Bulldogs went into halftime up 38-26.
Javon Moore brought the Cavaliers within 45-39 with a layup with 14:46 left, but Gardner-Webb responded with 13 consecutive points, including 10 straight by Harper.
