ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Freshman Kendall Knorr scored 15 points as Navy pulled away from IPFW 54-49 Wednesday night to exceed last season's win total.
Brandon Venturini added 11 points and Worth Smith 10 for the Midshipmen (4-4), who posted a 3-26 record in the 2011-12 campaign.
Navy took a 14-2 lead in the first 6:28 and led 24-16 at halftime.
IPFW got within a point twice after the break, the second time at 31-30 with 10:41 left. The Midshipmen answered with an 18-6 run, with Knorr scoring his 15 points in a 5-minute spurt, hitting 6 of 6 including 3 treys.
The Mastodons closed the gap to 52-49 with 44 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Isaiah McCray, but did not attempt another field goal. After a missed free throw and turnover by McCray, who led IPFW with 10 points, Smith's two free throws with 3 seconds left sealed the win.
