Jordan Spieth misses cut again at Deutsche Bank Championship

NORTON, Mass. -- In a year of firsts for Jordan Spieth, he added another one at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Saturday: a second consecutive missed cut for the first time in his career.

Following last week's poor performance at the Barclays, Spieth, this year's Masters and U.S. Open winner, posted rounds of 75-73 to finish well below the cut line at the second FedEx Cup playoff event.

"I've done a lot of things I've never done [before] positively this year," Spieth said after the round. "This is something I've never done that's negative. Normally my mental game is a strength of mine. And it's something I feel like I have an advantage over other players on. These past two weeks, it was a weakness for me. And I've just got to go back and reassess how to remain positive."

In Saturday's second round, Spieth posted 12 straight pars before making bogeys on three of the next five holes. He concluded his day with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole, his lone birdie of the afternoon.

Even so, he insisted that his game isn't as far off as it seems.

"I'm hitting the ball just fine," he said. "I'm hitting the ball as well as I was in the PGA, as well as I was at the Open. I have control of the golf ball just fine. For whatever reason, I'm not scoring. Today was my putter. Yesterday was my distance control from the fairways. Just not everything is exact and fine-tuned like it has been this whole year."

With a bye week upcoming, Spieth said he'd probably take four days off from practicing, then start preparing for the BMW Championship, where he'll need to get some swagger back.

"I need to walk with some cockiness in my step these next two tournaments," he said. "That's going to be a big stage. I don't think I have to fix much in my game other than really work hard on my putting into Conway [Farms] and then mentally I can control that. I can control walking with the cockiness, whether things are going good or bad, and that's what you have to have inside the ropes. And I'll bring it when we get to Chicago."

Spieth can regain the No. 1 world ranking after this week despite the missed cut. If Jason Day fails to win and Rory McIlroy doesn't finish inside the top 10, then Spieth will return to the top spot he owned before this week.

Among others to miss the cut at TPC-Boston were Justin Rose, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau.
