India finished the Rotterdam leg of their FIH Pro League assignments for the season with a 3-2 win over the Netherlands, in a performance that was built on a strong defensive effort, in a game where Craig Fulton's team had very little of the ball against their hosts.
India took the lead midway through the second quarter, through a penalty corner, that Jugraj Singh laced with serious power. However, they conceded just a few seconds later, as Pepijn van der Heijden's dragflick was almost as unstoppable as Jugraj's was earlier.
Abhishek gave India the lead again a few minutes later, after expertly trappign a pass from Jarmanpreet Singh into the circle, and then turning to his left, and unleashing a fierce reverse strike that went through Dutch goalkeeper Derk Meijer's legs, beating him for sheer power.
India took that lead into the half-time interval, and then came out with a clear plan to protect the lead they had. They did it superbly in the third quarter, as the Dutch were restricted to just two shots on goal in the entire quarter, neither of which forced Suraj Karkera into a save in the Indian goal.
India extended their lead in the fourth quarter, once again from a penalty corner. This one wasn't quite as planned, as the injection didn't meet its intended target. But Rajinder Singh improvised superbly, and smashed a superb dragflick into the bottom corner to give India some breathing room.
The Dutch pulled one back as Koen Bijen, in his 100th game for the Netherlands, got a small deflection on to a flick from van der Heijden. However, Joppe Wolbert was given a yellow card in the closing stages, which meant the hosts had to chase the game while being a player down.
India held on to finish with two wins out of four in the Rotterdam leg -- one each against Germany and the Netherlands. It was a creditable performance in Rotterdam from Fulton's side, particularly after the serious issues they'd had earlier in the season, particularly in the home leg against Belgium and Argentina.
India now move on to their last four games of this season's Pro League, as they travel to London to face England and Pakistan.
