An Alabama judge has postponed the Maori Davenport complaint against the Alabama High School Athletic Association until Feb. 1 and extended the temporary restraining order that allows Davenport to play with her high school basketball team until the hearing is held.
On Nov. 30, Davenport, a senior at Charles Henderson in Troy, Alabama, was ruled ineligible by Steve Savarese and the AHSAA for depositing an $857.20 stipend check from USA Basketball after playing for the U-18 team in August. The money was mistakenly sent by the organization, and USA Basketball has acknowledged it was at fault. The AHSAA says Davenport violated Alabama's amateurism rules when she deposited the check. Davenport repaid USA Basketball in full as soon as she was made aware of the mistake by USA Basketball in November. Still, the AHSAA ruled that she was ineligible and has twice upheld that ruling on appeal.
On Jan. 11, Circuit Court Judge Sonny Reagan granted an emergency motion that allowed Davenport to play in her first game since Nov. 29. Davenport scored 25 points in her return to the court that night, a 72-17 victory over Carroll High (Ozark, Alabama).
The hearing had been scheduled for Jan. 22.
Charles Henderson's final regular-season game is scheduled for Feb. 1.
