Spirit advance to NWSL title game with OT win over Red Stars

The Washington Spirit beat the Chicago Red Stars 2-1 in overtime Friday to advance to next week's National Women's Soccer League championship game.

Francisca Ordega scored the winner in the 111th minute of the NWSL semifinal off an assist from Christine Nairn.

The Spirit opened the scoring in the 36th minute when captain Ali Krieger headed in a pass from defender Shelina Zadorsky. The Red Stars' Christen Press leveled the score off an assist from Casey Short in the 81st minute.

Press nearly ended the game in regulation, but her shot in the 90th minute caromed off the crossbar.

Washington outshot Chicago 14-11. Both Spirit goalkeeper Kelsey Wys and Red Stars goalie Alyssa Naeher made three saves.

Portland Thorns FC will host the Western New York Flash on Sunday in the other semifinal. The NWSL championship game is Oct. 9 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.
