Chad Laycock became the first bowler to take five wickets in an over in South African T20 cricket, achieving the feat for KZN Inland against Titans in the CSA Pro20 Cup in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.
Laycock finished with career-best figures of 6 for 26, which included another South African T20 record of four wickets in four consecutive deliveries. In T20Is, the sequence has previously been achieved by Lasith Malinga, Rashid Khan, Curtis Campher and Jason Holder among Full Member teams.
Laycock also registered the best bowling figures in the history of CSA Pro20 Cup, surpassing Beuran Hendricks' 6 for 29 in 2014.
The 19th over of Titans' innings produced the remarkable record. Laycock first dismissed Leus du Plooy, before removing Dayyaan Galiem, Aphiwe Mnyanda, Janco Smit and Esosa Aihevba off the next four deliveries. The five wickets brought Titans innings to an end on 204 from 193 for 4.
Laycock had earlier provided KZN Inland with their first breakthrough, dismissing Lhuan-dre Pretorius for 81 off 36 balls in the ninth over after Titans had put on 112 for the opening stand.
Despite Laycock's record-breaking performance, KZN Inland lost the match by 21 runs. Chasing 205, they finished on 183 for 6, with Laycock contributing an unbeaten 31. The victory extended Titans' unbeaten run in the competition to six matches at the top of the table.
Laycock became the fourth bowler known to have taken five wickets in an over in men's T20 cricket, following Bangladesh's Al-Amin Hossain, India's Abhimanyu Mithun and Indonesia's Gede Priandana. Priandana is the only bowler, male or female, to achieve the feat in a T20 international when he did it against Cambodia in December 2025.
Al-Amin achieved the feat for UCB-BCB XI against Abahani Limited in the 2013-14 Victory Day T20 Cup. Mithun followed in the semi-final of the 2019-20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (India's domestic T20 competition), for Karnataka against Haryana.
