Well folks, that brings an end to all the action here in Pomona after a thrilling double-header. The fans in and around the stadium are now enjoying a spectacular fireworks display in celebration of Independence Day, and alongside those celebrations, it is time for me to sign off. Goodbye and goodnight!
Player of the Match: Kieron Pollard
Nicholas Pooran: "Very happy. Obviously, we needed a win today, especially chasing a total after quite a while. The way we went about adapting to the conditions was great. I think LAKR played really well, so credit goes to them, but I'm happy we could restrict them a bit and chase it down. [Did you look at yesterday's evening match?] Yeah, winning the toss was one part of it, but it was also about fighting through the tough moments. We felt like it gets better to bat under the lights, and that's what we wanted to do. The guys took responsibility. We saw the leading run-scorer in T20 cricket taking charge, calming the game down, and finishing it at the end with Corey. [Do you feel you're on your way now as a side?] Definitely. This gives us some serious momentum. We know as a group we work really hard to put ourselves in a position to win games. We're happy, but we want to stay really humble and build from here."
10:25 pm The Knight Riders struck early with the ball as Jason Holder removed QDK in the second over. The home side's bowlers were brilliant with the new ball, making life difficult for the batters and restricting MINY to 34 for 1 in the Powerplay - even with 13 runs coming off the final over of the restriction. Remarkably, at the 6.3-over mark, both teams were deadlocked at the exact same score of 37 for 1. Pooran's scratchy stint ended shortly after the Powerplay, departing for 16 off 23 balls. Pollard then began to accelerate, but Patel threw his wicket away in the 12th over for a 29-ball 32. Carmi le Roux turned the game on its head with back to back strikes in that over, removing both Monank and Tajinder Singh. Despite the wobble, Pollard looked rock-solid. Corey Anderson provided the perfect support from the other end, rotating the strike cleanly and finding the occasional boundaries. Pollard brought up his half-century off just 27 balls, dragging the required run rate back under control just as it threatened to slip away. He thrashed the bowlers all around the park in the death overs before Anderson sealed the victory with a massive six in the final over. Pollard remained unbeaten on a clinical 63, while Anderson anchored beautifully with 37. Their match-winning 88-run partnership came off just 48 balls, highlighted by a mature approach to play out Sunil Narine and target the rest of the attack. The Knight Riders may have missed a trick by not bowling Fabian Allen today, but it is all academic now. The head to head aggregate between these two teams now stands at a dominant 6-0 in favor of New York. With this victory, MI New York climb to the top of the table, while the Knight Riders slip to fifth. Narine was phenomenal and went unrewarded without a wicket, while Holder and van Schalkwyk claimed one apiece, and le Roux finished with two.
MI New York won by 6 wickets
4 runs needed off 2 balls. A wicket, anyone? Or a big six to silence the home crowd?
Carmi le Roux to bowl the last one. 9 needed off 6 balls. Pollard on strike. Knight Riders need a wicket here.
