Matt Short: "[How did you pull it out of the fire?] Look, I thought we were out of it a few times there. You know, credit to the bowlers in that second half of the innings to pull it back, obviously taking wickets was key there. They got off to a flyer, and then we sort of hung in there and kept taking wickets, which kept us in the game, really. And then obviously we lost a couple of early wickets, which again probably put us on the back foot. Credit to our middle order, and you know, our youngster Lhuan-dre is showing us how fast he is. He's a proper player. [Bowlers sparked the batting collapse] I think we just sort of started bowling what we weren't bowling in the first ten. We were a bit ill-disciplined in the first ten there, and then we went back to basics. We obviously played here a couple of days ago, and we knew what worked, so we tried to stick to that as much as we could. Obviously, taking wickets helped, which sort of put them a bit on the slower side, and we went from there. [Star performers of the team] I mean, Lhuan-dre is obviously a very young player, first time over here, just really classy. He's very mature for a young fella, very strong as well. He sets himself up nicely and hits the ball nice and hard. And then credit to Couchy there, he scored a few in the last game here and did it again tonight. He's another strong player, and hopefully he's not quite needed as much the rest of the tour, but he's showing some class as well."
Player of the Match, Brody Couch: "[How happy are you?] Bit of relief, but ultimately just pumped we could get a win tonight after a disappointing loss first game. [Do you remember playing in such a topsy-turvy T20?] Yeah, definitely played in a few games like this, but tonight was one of the testing material games, that's for sure. Halfway through the first innings, we just had to trust the process so that we can get back in the game after they got off to a flyer. So, yeah, just so pumped that we could get the win. [Conversation with Haris Rauf] Yeah, I think you have to in that situation. You have to back yourself. Look, we're just trying to bat for as long as we could, get to the last over and then reassess. And yeah, it paid off. [Home crowd] Oh yeah, they were awesome tonight. You could definitely feel it out there. So, I appreciate all the support from the fans. [Adjusted according to the pitch] Since they got off to a flyer, it was more so just focusing on our process, using the wicket, bowling that hard length top of the stumps, trying not to do too much. And, as I said before, it's been a game that ebbed and flowed, so it's nice to be on the right side of it."
Marcus Stoinis: "[What do you think held you guys from getting over the line?] Oh, look, I think we definitely had opportunities to win that, both with bat and ball, but with the bat especially. I think we almost got too far ahead of ourselves and didn't stick to the things that we know we should do to put together that big score. We had a great platform, so I think we could have obviously made an extra 30, 40, 50 runs, even. And then with the ball, we did really well to pull it back. I think the conditions changed a little bit. There was a bit of drizzle and maybe a bit of dew on the grass, but hats off to them. They did well. Both teams stuck in the game the whole time, and they did the same thing with the ball. So yeah, it is what it is. We're on the wrong side of this one, but hopefully we're on the right side of the next one. [Did conditions change in the middle overs?] I don't think conditions changed too much. It definitely gets harder in the back half of the innings, but I don't think we were smart enough to be honest. I think we got off to such a good start that to keep going at that tempo might have always been difficult and got us into trouble in the end. [Bowled out with four balls left] Oh, I mean, obviously, ideally that's not the plan, but that's the way it went."
10:08 pm What a way to turn things around in front of the home crowd for the Unicorns! They defied all the odds thanks to the incredible grit of their lower-order batters. It was actually a dream start for the Orcas, grabbing the wicket of Finn Allen right in the first over and then removing Short in the third. The Unicorns were struggling at 51 for 3 after the powerplay, with Pretorius the only batter looking in any sort of rhythm. He brought up his fifty off just 23 balls, striking a massive six over midwicket against Shanaka. A crucial 99-run partnership between Pretorius and Hardie stabilised the innings, but Shanaka eventually broke the stand when Hardie holed out at deep square leg. That triggered a mini batting collapse as Shanaka picked up two quick wickets, first Hardie for 28, and then Azam for a duck. Through it all, Pretorius played a gem of a knock, striking the ball all around the park as a lone ranger. He was eventually caught at long on after smashing a brilliant 87 off 39 balls, acting as the shining light for the Unicorns tonight with 9 fours and 6 sixes. The game ebbed and flowed from there, mirroring the first-innings collapse and taking the contest right down to the wire. There were crucial contributions down the order from Hassan and Bartlett, and then Couch fought till the very end alongside the tailenders. Taking the responsibility entirely on his own shoulders, Couch struck massive sixes to take his team over the line, remaining unbeaten on 26 off 14 balls. On the other hand, the Seattle Orcas' fielding was below average, letting through too many boundaries and misfields. Ultimately, their own middle and death-overs collapse in the first innings came back to haunt them. Among the bowlers, Stoinis, Shanaka, and Gannon grabbed two wickets each, while Baartman picked up one.
