Shoaib Bashir to Conway, no run, full length, drifting into the legs. Blocked down the pitch
55.2

Shoaib Bashir to Conway, no run, slides past the legs, a bit of excitement as the bails come off, but only via Smith's pads
55.1
0
Shoaib Bashir to Conway, no run, round the wicket, twirled onto a good length, solid block down the line of middle and leg

Twin spin, as Bashir continues for his 17th over of the day

Decent start for Bethell. The worry for England is this pitch might already be changing character

Bethell to Latham, no run, tight line on middle-and-leg, defended back to the bowler
54.5
1
Bethell to Conway, 1 run, pushed to cover to jog off the strike, rather thankfully you suspect
54.4
0
Bethell to Conway, no run, better line, fuller face on the block
54.3
0
Bethell to Conway, no run, wild! Has a wipe through the full length, two noises as the ball ends up in the keeper's glove, but the first noise is the toe of his bat on the ground...
54.2
0
Bethell to Conway, no run, skids through flat! Conway on the back foot, a bit nervy, has a flash at the width, doesn't connect

slip and leg slip

1
Bethell to Latham, 1 run, and he starts with a full-toss from over the wicket, calmly punched into the covers

4.01pm Hello fellow masochists and thrill-seekers. Welcome back to Trent Bridge for a hot and sweaty final session of a one-sided opening. It's going to be Jacob Bethell to open the action...

END OF OVER:

3.45pm: The Black Caps cruising on the autobahn. Cardus once called Trent Bridge a "lotus land for batting, where it is always afternoon and 360 for two wickets" - which is about right, although England have looked a long way from taking two wickets today. They could have had one when Devon Conway was hit on the front pad marginally before his inside edge off Shoiab Bashir... but England didn't review, and these two have carried on their merry way. Can they end up on this list? One more session to go and we'll find out soon enough. Miller back for it shortly

Tongue to Latham, 1 run, pitched full, dabbed towards backward point... Latham tucks his bat under his arm, and that is tea

"If we'd batted first I think we'd be about 350-8 around now..." huffs MrB. As in, The Gentleman Rhymer? I really do hope so

53.5
0
Tongue to Latham, no run, back of a length, sliding down the leg side

"Tough conditions, no doubt. But under Andy Flower, Eng would 'bowl dry' and force mistakes. This Eng just don't have the patience," mithers Dave H

Tongue to Latham, no run, short ball, 81mph/130kph in the channel, left alone this time
53.3
1
Tongue to Conway, 1 run, banged in short and pulled, in the air but on the bounce out to deep square leg
53.2
1
Tongue to Latham, 1 run, pitched up, tucked off the pads

Shiva adds: also, only the second double-hundred opening partnership in England in the last 15 years, and the previous one also came at this venue, in the previous Test, by Crawley and Duckett against Zimbabwe

53.1
2
Tongue to Latham, 2 runs, cut away to deep backward point, Atkinson has to put in the yards to cut this off in front of the short Bridgeford Road boundary

My colleague Shiva has this: "NZ's third-highest opening stand in away Tests and their highest since Mark Richardson and Lou Vincent added 231 in the Mohali Test in 2003"

Stokes to Conway, no run, lets this one go in the channel

"Wasn't Robinson unfit for this test?" No, Saifi. He was officially available. Whether he's "fit" to send down 40 overs in these conditions, is a slightly different question...

Stokes to Conway, no run, full on off, 84mph/135kph. Driven without timing to mid-off

Stokes to Conway, no run, full at the stumps, dug out into the covers
