5.30pm In recent memory, has a visiting team had a better opening day of a Test in Australia? Hasan Mahmud's career-best 6 for 55 set the tone as Australia were bundled out for 198, before Bangladesh's top order ensured the bowlers' work wasn't wasted. They have already knocked off almost half of Australia's total, and with the engine room of their batting still to come, Bangladesh hold all the aces at the end of day one. A remarkable turnaround for a team that lost by an innings to a Cricket Australia XI just last week.
It was all downhill for Australia after Cummins won the toss and chose to bat. There was about 4mm of grass on the surface at the start of the day, and Bangladesh's disciplined seam trio of Hasan Mahmud, Ebadot Hossain and Taskin Ahmed exploited it superbly. They never allowed Head, Weatherald or Labuschagne to settle, and barring Steven Smith's 45th Test fifty, it was a batting performance Australia will want to quickly forget.
When Bangladesh batted, Starc looked mildly menacing, but the rest of Australia's attack, including Lyon, couldn't make enough of an impression. Mominul (35*) and Tanzid (32*) added an unbroken 60 before stumps, and their first task tomorrow will be to eat further into Australia's lead.
Australia will surely regroup and come back with a stronger bowling performance, but how Bangladesh navigate the remainder of this Test could go a long way towards shaping perceptions of this Test side. For now, though, it's been a forgettable day for Australian fans, a memorable one for the Bangladesh faithful, and a thoroughly enjoyable one for the neutrals.
That's it from us today. Andrew McGlashan and Sreshth Shah will be back with you for day two. Until then, bye-bye!
Prasanna S: "From my memory this has to be one of the best day 1 performance by a visiting team nest to the the 98 not out by Australia and England ending up 157/0 on that MCG test day 1 in 2010.
Prakhar: "I remember when Ind won the 1st test of BGT 2024-25 as underdogs and everyone started giving up on Aussies, but everyone knows what happened next in that series."
SHAH: "Brand New Day coming tomorrow!"
Jarryd: "Reckon Bangladesh get bowled out for 250, Australia make 400 once the pitch flattens out, then roll Bangladesh for 100 in the fourth innings. "
Luke: "Just woeful from the Aussie bats. Sticking with Weatherald and Green was madness "
Poppy: "Watching from Cape Town from the early hours of the morning, and LOVING it! Test match cricket is such a beautiful thing and seeing Bangladesh doing so well, 95-1 against Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Lyon - well done Tigers! "
should be the day's last delivery...but before that, some chatter spotted between Starc and Mominul
ahsan: "these two batsmen already played more balls than 9 of Australian batsmen- oknious signs for Australia!" -- New day tomorrow, will bring fresh challenges
Jayeshds : "@ Benedict: don't worry bro...they will save the very best for Ashes!!!!"
Khademul Haque : "What about the over rate? I can see 14 overs remaining, but time left only 10 minutes, which can hardly make two overs or so. Who's at fault? Will there be any point deduction for it?" -- Bangladesh won't be docked anything since they rolled Australia over below 60 overs
Benedict: "Yes I'm watching from England, yes I'm loving watching Australia struggle. Come on Bangladesh!" -- Never change
Browly: "I can't believe we're one day in and Sean is already declaring this team done and dusted"

About 10 minutes now till the end of day's play. Important for the visitors to lock in now, otherise they'll risk exposing a new batter under fading light or use a nightwatcher

Sean: "Good start to the 12 month blockbuster run of test cricket. Could the end of this Aus team be closer than we think? Would love to see an upset here, Bangladesh have played well for the last couple of years now."
Peter Max : "Get Webster on for heaven's sake. We never needed four seamers on this track in the first place. "
