Richmond TD gamble pays off, Spiders beat Towson 31-28
RICHMOND, Va. -- David Broadus ran the ball in from the 2 on fourth down in the final quarter to put Richmond ahead for good and the Spiders held on to beat Towson 31-28 on Saturday.
The Spiders, trailing 28-24, lined up for a field goal, but quickly shifted Broadus into the quarterback slot and he charged in over right tackle for the winning score with 10:16 left.
Towson drove to the Richmond 38 but ran out of downs with 53 seconds remaining.
Kyle Lauletta threw for 233 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-31 passing and Xavier Goodall rushed for 128 yards as Richmond (4-1, 1-1) evened its Colonial Athletic Association record.
Shane Simpson led Towson (1-3, 0-2) with 106 yards rushing on 12 carries and Darius Victor ran for 99 yards on 19 rushes.
Towson led 28-21 with 13:11 remaining in the third. Griffin Trau kicked a field goal to close to 28-24.
