Gerard Johnson helps Norfolk St. top Hampton, 24-14
NORFOLK, Va. -- Gerard Johnson ran for 119 yards and a touchdown to help Norfolk State snap a six-game losing streak and beat Hampton 24-14 Saturday.
Johnson came into the game with 64 yards rushing on 32 carries for Norfolk State (1-3, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).
Greg Hankerson hit Isaac White for a 12-yard touchdown to put the Spartans up 17-14 with 3:16 left in the third quarter.
D'Metrius Williams picked off Hampton's David Watford and returned it to the Pirates' 38 before runs of 32 and six yards by Johnson set up a 2-yard rushing score by Quintreil Chung just two minutes and seven seconds later.
A 23-yard touchdown run by Johnson opened the scoring with 5:03 left in the first, but Hampton (2-2, 1-1) got a 7-yard scoring run from Christopher Dukes and a 10-yard touchdown pass from Watford to Rayshad Riddick to make it 14-7 at the half.
The all-time series is now 26-26-1.
