Samford upends Chattanooga 17-14, OT
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Andy Summerlin threw two touchdown passes and Warren Handrahan converted a 43-yard field goal in overtime as Samford took down Chattanooga 17-14 on Saturday night.
Chattanooga (8-3, 6-2 Southern Conference) had claimed a share of the conference title but Samford (7-4, 5-2) spoiled the Mocs bid to win it outright on Saturday. The Bulldogs have one conference game remaining while Chattanooga concluded its conference schedule against Samford.
Summerlin found Chris Cephus for a 92-yard touchdown pass to put the Bulldogs up 14-0 in the third quarter.
But Wes Dothard intercepted a pass by Summerlin in the fourth quarter, returning it 70 yards for a touchdown. Jacob Huesman connected with Faysal Shafaat on a 3-yard touchdown pass with 4:59 left to tie the game.
In overtime, Samford opened with possession and took the lead on Handrahan's field goal. Chattanooga's 31-yard field goal attempt missed, hitting the left upright.
