San Diego beats Drake 23-13
SAN DIEGO -- Mason Mills passed for three touchdowns in a 23-0 run as San Diego stormed from behind to defeat Drake 23-13 on Saturday, two days after learning the school was forfeiting a shot at the league title and a playoff bid because of financial aid violations.
The Toreros (8-3, 7-1) were a contender for winning their first outright Pioneer League Football League championship -- and the automatic berth to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs -- until USD President Mary Lyons told the assembled team on Thursday that the school was forfeiting. A review this fall had discovered the school was improperly awarding financial aid to players.
Drake (6-5, 5-3) had jumped out 7-0 on a 5-yard pass from Andy Rice to Nick Rosa. Mills hit 29 of 47 passes for 287 yards in the USD comeback with touchdowns to Brandon White (1 yard), Bug Rivera (11) and Reggie Bell (2).
