Hughes' 3 Tds, North Greenville defeat VMI 37-24
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Nelson Hughes threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score Saturday to lead North Greenville over VMI 37-24 in the first meeting between the schools.
North Greenville (2-0), a Division II Independent, had little trouble handling VMI (1-2), opening a 23-10 halftime lead.
Freddie Martino had 12 receptions for 182 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown. Hughes also connected with DeVontez Rouse for a 23-yard score. Both came in the first half.
The Crusaders rolled up 504 total yards, 215 on the ground. Trey Walker led eight North Greenville rushers with 63 yards on 13 carries and added a 2-yard touchdown.
VMI's Eric Kordenbrock, who completed a pass to nine different receivers, threw for 369 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, but VMI managed just 22 yards rushing on 23 carries.
