Stony Brook shuts out Rhode Island 24-0
KINGSTON, R.I. -- Marcus Coker rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown, leading Stony Brook to a decisive 24-0 victory in the team's season opener against Rhode Island on Saturday.
Stony Brook's Lyle Negron completed 12 of 19 passes for 186 yards and one touchdown. The Seawolves defense held the Rhode Island ground game to just 67 yards. Bob Bentsen was 25 for 34 and 224 yards for Rhode Island (0-2).
Stony Brook was able to capitalize on Rams mistakes, recovering three Rhode Island fumbles. Stony Brook's Rueben Johnson recovered a Rams fumble late in the fourth quarter to stop Rhode Island's final drive. Three plays later, Negron connected with Adrian Coxson for a 30-yard touchdown to seal the win for the Seawolves.
It was the first meeting between the two teams.
