O'Shaughnessy leads Georgia's wild 13-12 comeback win over Mississippi State
Michael O'Shaughnessy hit a go-ahead, three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap a wild comeback, as Georgia defeated Mississippi State 13-12 in a back-and-forth slugfest in Game 1 of the NCAA Athens Super Regional on Saturday at Foley Field.
O'Shaughnessy, filling in for suspended third baseman Trey Phelps, finished 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs for Georgia. Rylan Lujo also had a multihomer game, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and two RBIs. Daniel Jackson added a solo home run as part of a 2-for-5 day. Kolby Branch delivered a key two-run double in the fifth inning, and Ryan Black drove in two with a double in the fourth.
Mississippi State mashed six home runs in the loss. Catcher Kevin Milewski led the charge, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs. Ace Reese went 3-for-6 with a solo home run that gave the Bulldogs a temporary lead in the top of the eighth. Reed Stallman hit a three-run homer, while Gehrig Frei and Ryder Woodson each added solo shots.
The game featured massive momentum swings after Mississippi State jumped out to a 7-0 lead, highlighted by a six-run second inning capped by Stallman's three-run blast. Georgia stormed back, scoring nine runs across the fourth and fifth innings to take a 9-7 lead. The teams then traded leads and tied the game twice more before O'Shaughnessy's go-ahead home run in the eighth. The teams combined for 11 home runs.
Justin Byrd pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Georgia. Neither starting pitcher was effective, as Georgia's Joey Volchko allowed seven runs (four earned) over five innings, and Mississippi State's Tomas Valincius was tagged for seven runs in 4⅓ innings. Georgia reliever Dylan Vigue was forced to exit the game in the top of the eighth inning after being struck by a comebacker.
