Ole Miss uses long ball to knock off Auburn in opener


Judd Utermark and Collin Reuter each hit a two-run homer to spark Ole Miss to a 6-4 victory over host Auburn on Friday at Plainsman Park in the opening game of an NCAA super regional.

Utermark hit a two-run homer to left field in the top of the fifth inning, while Reuter extended the Rebels lead to 6-2 in the sixth with a two-run shot to center. Brayden Randle drove in the Rebels' first two runs with RBI singles in the second and fourth innings, finishing his night 2-for-3. Austin Fawley added a pair of doubles, and Dom Decker collected two hits for Ole Miss (40-21).

Starter Hunter Elliott pitched 4⅓ innings for the Rebels, allowing two earned runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Relievers Hudson Calhoun and Walker Hooks combined for the victory and save despite Hooks giving up a solo home run in the ninth.

For Auburn (42-21), Mason McCraine went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a solo homer. Chris Rembert chipped in an RBI single in the fifth, and Chase Fralick drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third. Bub Terrell went 1-for-2 with two walks.

Auburn starter Andreas Alvarez struck out 10 but was tagged for five earned runs on seven hits, including a home run, in 5⅔ innings. Reliever LJ Cormier pitched the final 3⅓ innings, allowing a two-run home run and striking out four.
