Marcus Mariota plays through left knee injury

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota took a big shot in the second quarter of Tennessee’s game against Miami.

He was hit on the side of his left knee by Miami’s Olivier Vernon who was flagged for a roughing the passer penalty.

Mariota remained in the game after being attended to by the medical staff. The game stoppage for the penalty allowed him to stay on the field. Zach Mettenberger was on the field and ready to take over but ultimately returned to the sideline.

It was part of an overall rough game for Mariota, who completed 21 of 33 passes for 219 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions (one pick-six) in a 38-10 loss.

Three plays after injuring his knee, Mariota attempted a pass that was initially ruled incomplete. It was ruled a fumble by officials after a Miami challenge.

After the Titans got the ball back, Mariota returned with a brace on his left knee. He fumbled a second time, losing the ball in traffic.

Mariota was sacked five times, four of them by Cameron Wake. He hit 10 of 15 passes for 103 yards in the first half. The Titans pulled rookie right tackle Jeremiah Poutasi because of his struggles against Wake. But Jamon Meredith is also having issues.

The Titans trailed 17-3 as the Dolphins have come to life after a bye and a new energy with interim head coach Dan Campbell.
