NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans will hopefully learn a lot about themselves Sunday night (8 ET) and will get some questions answered.
As they get ready for the Rams, I've been thinking about three things I'd like to see Tennessee do. I expect No. 3 to happen on Sunday, while the other two aren't game specific.
Play Marqueston Huff at corner some. The Titans like Huff, their backup free safety, as well as Khalid Wooten, a third-team safety, because of their versatility. Both have played and can play cornerback, and coach Ken Whisenhunt said the team kind of keeps that in its pocket. But through camp, Huff and Wooten have focused on their primary positions in the defensive backfield, not their secondary ones. With Jason McCourty (groin) and Blidi Wreh-Wilson (ankle) out for a long stretch now, the Titans have had a lot of time to see Coty Sensabaugh and undrafted rookie Cody Riggs play. I wonder if there isn't a scenario when, if Michael Griffin is healthy and playing ahead of Huff, Huff could be a good option in the nickel or dime package. It would seem now would be the time to try it out.
Explore dealing Mike Martin. If there is a 4-3 team thin on the defensive line, it could be willing to give up something for Martin, who's best as a 4-3 tackle. He can be an effective role player, but at the one position where the Titans are deepest, he could ultimately have trouble holding a roster spot of being active. He's probably the eighth defensive lineman on a team that finished last season with seven.
Stick with Jeremiah Poutasi at right tackle. He got all the first-team work Thursday. I understand he's raw and there will be some rookie mistakes. But he was the 66th overall pick in the draft. He should have a lot of upside and respond well to baptism by fire. You'd hope he could learn quickly and put himself on a good curve.
