TAMPA, Fla. -- We continue our series of pre-camp position-by-position analysis with the running backs.
Coach Lovie Smith has said repeatedly that Doug Martin is his starting running back. But it’s hard to totally believe that because Martin has had two mediocre years after a phenomenal rookie season in 2012.
It’s also hard to believe Martin’s starting job is safe because of the presence of Charles Sims. It’s important to remember that Smith and general manager Jason Licht drafted Sims, and they didn’t draft Martin. Sims could end up being the starter if he has a strong camp.
The competition between Martin and Sims is one of several battles in the backfield. Bobby Rainey and Mike James will compete for the third running back spot.
There also will be strong competition at fullback between veteran Jorvorskie Lane and rookie Joey Iosefa.
