RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks' travel schedule this season includes 27,766 miles in the air, third-most among NFL teams.
They've already traveled across the country to take on the New York Jets, New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints. This weekend, it's a trip from Seattle to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers.
The team plane has two seats on either side and four in the middle. But players don't have to sit next to each other. They are spread out enough so that each guy basically has two seats. And the coaches sit in first class.
I asked several players questions about the long trips. Here's what they said.
How do you spend your time on the plane?
Richard Sherman: "You sleep half of it. You wake up, you walk around, you watch your shows. Probably hope Doug [Baldwin] is asleep and go mess with Doug. You pass the time."
Russell Wilson: "This year, I’ve been really trying to take care of my legs as much as I can so my legs don’t get too heavy or whatever. I try to stay as fresh as possible, move as much as I can on the plane, but also study on the plane. That’s when I get a lot of my checks in, a lot of my looks, a lot of, ‘If they do this, what am I going to do?’ type of solutions. And really game plan as much as I can. Tons of studying."
Mark Glowinski: "Usually the first hour-and-a-half or so, I might watch a movie to settle down. For the most part [after that], I’ll watch film and go over my notes. If it’s a five- or six-hour flight, I might study for a little bit, then watch a movie. Then if I have any other time, sometimes read."
Jermaine Kearse: "I usually read a book or try to find something to watch on the plane. I read a book by Judah Smith called, ‘How’s Your Soul?’ Just kind of figuring you out. It’s a faith-based book. Just figuring out you and your own faith and whatnot."
Kelcie McCray: "Watch movies, eat, go to sleep, wake up again. Usually have time to eat again or watch a movie or listen to something. A lot of guys try to stay active -- moving around and walking around the plane to keep the blood flowing -- and hydrate a lot. Just not sitting down for a whole five- or six-hour flight."
What do you watch?
Glowinski: "The last trip, I was able to watch three movies and still get [my studying] in there. I watched ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ and then ‘[The] Shallows’ and something else."
Sherman: "I’ll probably watch 'A Knight’s Tale' and then I’ll probably watch the second 'Hobbit.' That should take up the whole trip."
McCray: "I’m all over the place. I watch everything. Last flight, I watched ‘Finding Dory.’ It was a pretty good movie, too. But I watch everything."
Jeremy Lane: "I usually try to find a little comedy movie or a documentary. Other than that, I’ll be asleep."
Is it hard to sleep on the plane?
McCray: "It is hard to sleep. There’s a lot of loud and annoying guys on there [laughs]. That’s why I put my headphones on and go to sleep. It’s uncomfortable, but you get used to it."
Bradley Sowell: "It’s pretty hard for a big guy. You’re just laying in this little seat. You really can’t lay down and get comfortable."
Glowinski: "I don’t really like sleeping because then when you get back there, it’s harder to sleep. So I’d rather try to stay up for the whole flight."
Cliff Avril: "It’s ridiculously hard because none of us are in first class."
Are any guys loud the whole time, making it hard for others to sleep?
Sowell: "It used be T-Rawls [Thomas Rawls] and C-Mike [Christine Michael]. They liked to rap to each other back and forth. You could hear it. The were pretty loud. We’ll see how T-Rawls is this week without C-Mike."
Jeremy Lane: "This team is pretty good. We don’t have too many clowns who joke the whole time where people can’t get rest. Pretty much everybody will fall asleep, and it’ll be quiet."
Avril: "Mike B [Michael Bennett]. The first 45 minutes of the flight, he’s always the loudest, joking around, making it fun."
Do guys try to get up and stretch?
Glowinski: "Every once in awhile, walk up and down the aisle. Just do some hip and hamstring stretches, loosen up."
McCray: "You’ll see guys across the aisle or laid out across the seats or whatever. There’s really not enough room, but you’ve just got to make the best of it."
Lane: "No, none of that. I’m asleep or watching movies."
