As expected, Evan Mathis was too pricey for Seahawks

RENTON, Wash. -- You can cross Evan Mathis' name off the list of free-agent offensive linemen that could be of help to the Seattle Seahawks.

Mathis signed with the Denver Broncos, the team announced Tuesday. It's a one-year deal that according to multiple reports is worth as much as $4 million if unspecified incentives are reached. That's likely more than the Seahawks were either willing or able to pay given their tight salary-cap situation.

Mathis, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, visited the Seahawks over the weekend. His availability fit nicely with Seattle's need at left guard, where the team recently moved Justin Britt from his previous spot at right tackle after others failed to claim the job. But Mathis' price tag likely precluded a deal with the Seahawks, who don't have much cap room remaining.

Coach Pete Carroll said on Monday that the meeting went "very well," but his comments didn't suggest that anything was going to happen.

"He would obviously bring us experience and all that, but there's a lot of issues here that we have to take care of to get that in order," Carroll said. "We got the information that we needed."

The Seahawks were scheduled to meet with center Samson Satele on Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan. Carroll said Seattle would continue to look at free-agent offensive linemen.

"We're going to keep competing to see who else is there and available as we try to make our choices," Carroll said.

"Really, we're going one step at a time, so you'll see some guys' names come up again today. We're continuing to look. We want to know who's available."
