I'm on vacation until March 4, but while I'm out, here is a position-by-position rundown on where the Seahawks stand at each spot and what they may need heading into 2015. Today it's the defensive backs.
The biggest concern in the Seattle secondary is recovering from injuries. Free safety Earl Thomas is having a torn labrum repaired in his shoulder. Strong safety Kam Chancellor played the Super Bowl with a torn MCL in his left knee. And cornerback Richard Sherman has a torn ligament in his left elbow. Fortunately, he will not need surgery, but his recovery will take time. And nickelback Jeremy Lane, who had surgery to repair a complete fracture in his left arm suffered in the Super Bowl, also will undergo ACL surgery and likely be out until midseason in 2015.
Cornerbacks -- Starter Byron Maxwell is an unrestricted free agent and will be one of the most sought-after corners in the market. It will be difficult for the Seahawks to keep him considering the money they will have to spend on new deals for Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner. If Maxwell leaves, that makes Tharold Simon the starters. Simon is talented, but still makes a lot of mental mistakes. He gave up two TDs in the Super Bowl. The Seahawks also like Marcus Burley, who played well in the nickel coverages when lane was out.
Safeties -- Backup Jeron Johnson is a free agent and may end up leaving. DeShawn Shead is a lanky guy who can play safety or corner, but the main thing is to get Thomas and Chancellor healthy. Eric Pinkins, a rookie in 2014 who spent the season on IR, will get a string look as a backup entering 2015.
Draft -- If Maxwell leaves, the Seahawks have to get help in the draft or free agency as insurance in case Simon doesn't develop as expected. The same is true if Johnson leaves. The starters in the Legion of Boom are the best in the league, but depth is an issue. Bringing back former Seahawk cornerback Walter Thurmond, a free agent this year, looks like a good option as a man who can play outside of inside.
