I'm on vacation until March 4, but while I'm out, here is a position-by-position rundown on where the Seahawks stand at each spot and what they may need heading into 2015.
Today it's the offensive line: The Seahawks need some upgrading here because pass blocking has been a problem over the last two seasons.
Guards -- Starting left guard James Carpenter is an unrestricted free agent and probably will get some offers from other teams. He had his best year in 2014, but the Seahawks could be looking to make a change here. Right guard J.R. Sweezy is playing at a high level and the coaches view him as one of the better guards in the league. Alvin Bailey can back up either guard spot, but he needs to get in better shape.
Centers -- Former Pro Bowler Max Unger played in only six regular-season games last season with injuries to his knee and ankle. Unger is starting the third year of a four-year deal that will pay him $4.5 million this season. He is a quality player who makes all the right line calls, but the Seahawks learned they can win without him, going 6-0 down the stretch while Unger was out. Steve Schilling, who ended the year on IR, is a free agent. The Seahawks are high on Patrick Lewis, who improved every week while playing in place of Unger. Veteran Lemuel Jeanpierre also is a free agent.
Tackles -- Right tackle Justin Britt took his lumps at times as a rookie starter, but he played every down in the regular season and will continue to improve. Left tackle Russell Okung is in the final year of a deal that will pay him a base salary of $4.8 million this season, but count $7.3 million against the salary cap. Okung didn't play at his previous Pro Bowl level in 2014, but he was playing hurt a lot of the time. Alvin Bailey is Seattle's utility man as the first backup at tackle and guard. The Seahawks have high hopes for 2014 rookie Garry Gilliam, a talented athlete who played tight end most of his college career.
Draft -- The O-line continues to be a major need area for the Seahawks. While the starters rank as some of the best run blockers in the NFL, pass blocking must improve and the Seahawks needs to look for players in the draft who can upgrade that situation soon.
