Eagles DB Eric Rowe, OL John Moffitt run with first teams

PHILADELPHIA -- Chip Kelly and his staff broke the first week of Philadelphia Eagles training camp up in sections. The first three days were one section, followed by a day off. When practice resumed Thursday at the NovaCare Complex, the second section of camp began.

There were visible signs. Although Kelly makes a point of saying he doesn’t keep a depth chart during training camp, there were changes in the lineup. Rookie cornerback Eric Rowe, a second-round draft pick from Utah, was moved up to the first team. Rowe played opposite Byron Maxwell in the first-team defense.

Along the offensive line, John Moffitt was the first-team right guard. For the first three days of camp, that role belonged to Matt Tobin. On Thursday, Tobin played right tackle on the second-team line.

Again, none of this is written in ink. Kelly and his staff will continue to rotate players in different situations. But the Eagles signed Moffitt in June, after their minicamp and after the release of left guard Evan Mathis. While Tobin and Andrew Gardner were expected to compete for the right guard spot, the signing of Moffitt was significant.

“The one thing that is interesting with John is how quickly he's picked things up,” Kelly said. “He's intelligent, and Stout (Jeff Stoutland, the Eagles’ offensive line coach) will tell you that first thing. Now for those guys, we haven't had pads on, so to say he can do this and this, he looks good moving around in individual drills without pads on. I think the first thing that stuck out to us as a staff was how quickly he has picked things up. He's been in a couple different systems in the National Football League, so it's a matter of transferring it into how we call it, but he has done it before.”

Moffitt was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks. He started 15 games over his first two seasons. In 2013, Moffitt was traded to the Denver Broncos. He played in two games with the Broncos before deciding to retire from football. He has not played since then. Moffitt struggled with alcohol and illegal drugs before going to rehab and deciding to attempt a comeback.

Other lineup changes Thursday were spurred by the absence of running back DeMarco Murray, who went home with an unspecified illness, and linebacker Kiko Alonso, who has a concussion.

When Murray didn’t practice Sunday due to the risk of dehydration, Darren Sproles took the first-team reps. On Thursday, Ryan Mathews was the first-team running back. DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks were the first-team inside linebackers with Alonso out.
