PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Sandy Alderson confirmed that Kyle Farnsworth has been released, but may be re-signed within a few days.
Alderson and assistant GM John Ricco informed Farnsworth on Sunday that he would not make the Opening Day roster.
Alderson said the Mets were unwilling to pay Farnsworth a $100,000 retention bonus to send him to the minors. But the Mets would be willing to bring Farnsworth back without that $100,000 obligation. So after Farnsworth has the opportunity to shop his services, which is mandated by the Players' Association, the Mets could re-sign him to a minor-league deal.
Presumably, that new minor-league contract would give Farnsworth the right to opt out of the deal at a specified in-season date if he remains in the minors at that point.
