NEW YORK -- Now that’s more like it.
For the first time since July 6-7, the New York Mets have won consecutive games.
They now try to get some revenge against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a three-game series at Chase Field. The D-backs swept the Mets at Citi Field last week.
Bartolo Colon (10-6, 3.35 ERA) opposes left-hander Robbie Ray (5-11, 4.57) in Monday’s 9:40 p.m. ET opener in Phoenix.
Arizona was routed 16-2 on Sunday at Fenway Park and was swept in a three-game series in Boston after departing Queens.
The Mets are embarking on a three-city, 10-game trip. After a three-game series in Phoenix, the Mets make stops in San Francisco and St. Louis.
MONDAY’S NEWS REPORTS:
Steven Matz took a no-hit bid one out into the eighth inning before surrendering a single over the first-base bag to Alexei Ramirez on pitch No. 105. The hit spared Terry Collins an agonizing decision about how many pitches Matz should be allowed to throw to complete a no-hitter. The Mets went on to beat the Padres, 5-1, in Sunday’s rubber game. Wilmer Flores and Neil Walker had solo homers and T.J. Rivera produced his first two RBIs as a big leaguer. Read game recaps in the Post, Daily News, Times, Newsday, Record and at NJ.com and MLB.com.
Yoenis Cespedes is due to begin a rehab assignment on Monday with Class A St. Lucie as the designated hitter. Cespedes, who had been slowed for a month by a right quadriceps injury before landing on the disabled list, is eligible to be activated Friday.
Zack Wheeler is due to be examined on Monday by Dr. James Andrews. Wheeler experienced elbow discomfort after his first rehab start since undergoing Tommy John surgery. Read more in Newsday.
