NEW YORK -- The National League East race may not be over after all.
The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins for the second night in a row Wednesday, 6-0. If the Washington Nationals can finish off the Philadelphia Phillies -- they were leading 12-2 when this game ended -- they'll pull within 7.5 games of the Mets in the division.
As for these two teams, the Mets are now 83-63 and the Marlins are 63-83.
Not bad Bart: Bartolo Colon gave the Mets a chance to win Wednesday. He wasn't great, but he limited the Marlins to three runs in 5⅔ innings.
Martin Prado and JT Realmuto took Colon deep in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively -- both solo shots. He gave up one more run in the sixth inning before giving way to the bullpen.
Hansel Robles wiggled out of the trouble Colon left behind in the sixth, and pitched a scoreless seventh. Tyler Clippard gave up a solo homer to Justin Bour in the eighth, and the Marlins scored two more runs off Erik Goeddel and Sean Gilmartin in the ninth.
Nothing doing: The Mets had just three hits off Miami starter Adam Conley in seven innings. David Wright had a double in the fourth inning and a single in the sixth, and Michael Cuddyer had a single in the fifth, but the Mets never even got a runner to third base.
Marlins relievers Mike Dunn, Bryan Morris and Kyle Barraclough handled the eighth and ninth, and gave up no more hits. The Mets got a pair of walks off Dunn in the eighth, but Morris came in and got Wright to ground out.
What's next: A day off before a September edition of the Subway Series commences at Citi Field.
