Logan Verrett loses roster spot in Tuesday shuffle

NEW YORK -- Right-hander Logan Verrett was demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas before Tuesday's series opener against the San Diego Padres.

Verrett had been promoted Saturday when Jonathon Niese went on paternity leave.

The Mets needed two roster spots on Tuesday with Niese returning and Tyler Clippard joining the Mets after his acquisition from the Oakland Athletics. Jenrry Mejia landing on the restricted list after a second PED suspension opened the other roster spot.

Verrett did not appear with the Mets during his weekend cameo. He compiled a 0.73 ERA in 12 1/3 innings with the club during an early tour of duty.

Niese is due to face the Padres on Thursday.
