NEW YORK -- The New York Mets were engaged in trade talks concerning Troy Tulowitzki, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday.
Tulowitzki, the slugging but injury-prone shortstop in the second year of a seven-year, $132 million contract, was dealt by the Colorado Rockies to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.
"Our conversations [with the Rockies regarding Tulowitzki] involved more than an inquiry on our part, it went further than that," Alderson said. "But beyond that I just can’t comment."
The GM admitted he was "a little surprised" when he learned of the Tulowitzki trade. But the Mets might still add another hitter before the July 31 trade deadline.
"We’re still talking [to other teams]," Alderson said. "I’ve been hesitant to make predictions in the past and will continue to be hesitant to do so. There’s still a few days to go. We’ll continue to talk, and we’ll see where it takes us."
