Jets need to change karma against Bills ... or else

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- For the New York Jets, it's back to the scene of their Week 17 debacle, one of the worst losses in franchise history.

With a chance to secure their first playoff berth since 2010, the Jets suffered a major meltdown against the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium, since re-named New Era Field. The Jets need to start their own new era Thursday night or else they will be an 0-2 hole.

Inexplicably, they've dropped five straight to the Bills, having been outscored, 162-74.That's embarrassing. You know what's really embarrassing? The last two defeats came against their former coach, Rex Ryan -- both by the same score, 22-17.

It won't be a good look if Todd Bowles falls to 0-3 against his predecessor.

The Bills are 0-1, too, coming off an ugly loss to the Baltimore Ravens, so there will be plenty at stake.

Here are six Bills to watch, courtesy of ESPN Bills reporter Mike Rodak:

OFFENSE

QB Tyrod Taylor -- Expectations rose for Taylor when the Bills gave him a five-year extension last month, and he failed to meet the higher bar Sunday against the Ravens. Taylor managed only 111 yards passing and wasn't a threat to a Ravens defense that schemed to make him throw from the pocket. Ryan said Monday that the Jets' defense is better than the Ravens', which turns the heat up more on Taylor to perform like the Bills need from their potential franchise quarterback.

WR Greg Salas -- The former Jets receiver comes into focus as top receiver Sammy Watkins' status is clouded by foot soreness. If Watkins can't play, Salas and speedster Marquise Goodwin are the only candidates to fill the void. Salas played two seasons, 2013-14, in New York, so fans of Gang Green know him well.

LT Cyrus Kouandjio -- Watkins was Doug Whaley's first pick as Bills general manager in 2014, and Kouandjio was his second. The former second-round pick has been a disappointment since entering the NFL but is now thrust into a potential starting role if left tackle Cordy Glenn can't play Thursday night because of an ankle injury. The Bills believe Kouandjio has made progress as a blocker since the summer, but he'll be tested against the Jets' potent defensive line.

DEFENSE

OLB Jerry Hughes -- The Bills' best pass rusher was in the news Sunday because he put a video on Instagram of him taking an Uber to the Bills' game in Baltimore. Ryan joked Monday that all Bills players should take Uber to every game because Hughes had an "outstanding" afternoon. He had two sacks in the opener.

CB Ronald Darby -- One of the NFL's best rookies last season, Darby made one of the plays of the game in Buffalo's win over the Jets at MetLife Stadium. The second-round pick blanketed Brandon Marshall on a fourth-and-2 pass in the fourth quarter, tackling him short of the first down. Darby was flagged for an unnecessary roughness call in Sunday's opener, but the Bills love his aggressiveness and think he can be a star at cornerback.

S Aaron Williams -- Considered the Bills' top safety, Williams was limited to 28 out of 68 defensive plays against the Ravens. Ryan wanted to keep Williams, who missed most of last season with a neck injury and most of the preseason with a concussion, fresh for the long haul. However, his replacement -- fourth-year safety Duke Williams -- couldn't keep up with Mike Wallace on a 66-yard touchdown Sunday, which could give the Jets hope for similar success in the deep game.
