Jerry Reese on offensive line: Will Beatty will be back, Justin Pugh could play tackle

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- With six weeks left until the start of the regular season, offensive line remains a major question mark for the New York Giants. All five starting slots are being manned by players who didn't occupy them last year. And with starting left tackle Will Beatty sidelined for several more months due to a torn pectoral muscle, tackle appears to be an especially worrisome position.

"I think we have depth there," Giants GM Jerry Reese insisted before Sunday's practice. "We're going to get Will Beatty back, but [Justin] Pugh is playing guard and he could easily go out there and play tackle. He's been a starter out there for a couple of years, so if we have to move him back out there, we're not afraid to do that. And again, we're going to get Will back."

In the meantime, rookie Ereck Flowers is getting the reps as the starting left tackle and working feverishly to get up to speed on the transition from the college game to the NFL game. Pugh, who started the first two years of his career at right tackle, has been moved to left guard for his third. Weston Richburg, the 2014 second-round pick who started at left guard last year, has moved to his natural position of center. Veterans Geoff Schwartz and Marshall Newhouse are playing right guard and right tackle, respectively.

Now, if things aren't working out with that alignment in a few weeks, the Giants could make changes. Someone like Brandon Mosley could end up getting a look at right tackle. Or, as Reese indicated, Pugh could move back there. That's clearly not the Giants' preference, but if they really believe Beatty's timetable is accelerating, they could make a temporary move like that. When Beatty initially had his surgery in the spring, the prognosis kept him out until at least November. But Reese sounded more optimistic Sunday.

"We're going to get Will Beatty back at some point, hopefully maybe in October. I'm not sure exactly what the timeline is, but he's working hard to get back," Reese said. "We drafted Ereck Flowers, obviously. We have some young veterans that we've drafted lately, and a couple of older guys we have on our offensive line, and I think we'll have enough to get us through and play well up front."

They also have been in touch with veteran tackle Jake Long, a free agent who has been in their building twice in the past couple of months for visits. Long is recovering from his second ACL surgery in as many years, and the Giants continue to monitor his health as they haven't ruled out the possibility of bringing him in.

"We're going to keep our options open with respect to him as well," Reese said of Long.
