Point guard Jorge Gutierrez scored 14 points on Wednesday as Mexico opened play in the FIBA Americas Olympic qualifying tournament with a 66-58 win over Brazil in Mexico.
Gutierrez signed a multi-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks in April after joining the team on the first of two 10-day contracts in late January. He began last season with the Brooklyn Nets, was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in early December, and was waived by the Sixers two days later without playing a game.
The 6-foot-3 Gutierrez played 20 total games last season, 10 each for the Nets and Bucks, and averaged 2.7 points in 8.8 minutes. He was undrafted coming out of Cal in 2013 when he was signed by the Nets and played 15 games that season.
Mexico is trying to qualify for the Olympics for the first time since 1976.
