EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings won't have guard Alex Boone and linebacker Eric Kendricks in their lineup on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
Both Boone and Kendricks were ruled out for the game on Friday with concussions they sustained against the Chicago Bears on Monday night. The Vikings appeared to be preparing Jeremiah Sirles to start at left guard after Sirles filled in for Boone on Monday night, while Audie Cole probably will start at middle linebacker and Chad Greenway will take Kendricks' spot in the nickel.
Kendricks' speed and instincts have made him a solid defender in pass coverage, and his absence could make for an even more difficult matchup against Lions running back Theo Riddick, who has 34 receptions.
"He's good in the screen game, he's good getting out of the backfield and in one-on-one situations," Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. "And then, when they empty the backfield, he's a guy you have to be careful with, as well. I think [it's] mostly his acceleration and his quickness."
Zimmer said he's confident in the 33-year-old Greenway, who mostly has played in the base defense this year.
"Chad is a great player," Zimmer said. "He's always prepared and ready to go. If he gets the opportunity to play some more plays, I know he'll be excited."
Running back Jerick McKinnon is questionable with an ankle injury, though McKinnon has said he plans to play. Defensive tackle Tom Johnson is questionable after being a limited participant the last two days following his return from a concussion, and safety Andrew Sendejo (ankle) is also questionable.
Guard Zac Kerin (hand) and defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd (knee) will miss Sunday's game. Wide receiver Jarius Wright is set to return from an ankle injury.
