DETROIT -- After catching 13 passes for 216 yards in the Minnesota Vikings' last two games, it appears rookie receiver Stefon Diggs will keep his spot in the starting lineup for now.
According to a league source, Diggs will start for the second straight week on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, following up on a seven-catch, 129-yard performance that earned him NFL Rookie of the Week honors against the Kansas City Chiefs. Diggs was in the Vikings' top three-receiver package at practice on Friday, with Mike Wallace and Jarius Wright, and he figures to be at split end ahead of Charles Johnson, who's probable to return from a rib injury on Sunday.
Offensive coordinator Norv Turner took it upon himself to slow down the fervor surrounding Diggs this week, saying "there's a reason he went in the fifth round" and adding, "He had some inconsistencies.
"When we got him here, we made it clear to him he needed to overcome those inconsistencies if he’s going to make it and he’s worked hard to do that."
As coach Mike Zimmer said this week, though, "You don’t lose your starting job because of injury, but you lose your starting job because of performance." As well as Diggs has played in the past two weeks -- and as much as he's done to help the Vikings establish a downfield passing game -- it's hard to envision him not being a prominent part of the game plan, whether he's starting or not. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Diggs has caught seven passes of 15 yards or more the past two games. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had his best two games of the year throwing downfield, hitting 10 of his 17 passes of 15 yards or more for 255 yards.
Johnson, on the other hand, had caught only six passes for 46 yards in three games this season, and as he comes back from the injury that kept him out the past two weeks, he could have to work his way into the Vikings' receiver rotation again. Diggs has capitalized on his opportunity and it appears he'll get a chance to keep it going against the Lions.
