MINNEAPOLIS -- We're continuing our look at the players drafted over the past decade at the spots where the Minnesota Vikings will pick in this year's NFL draft. At pick No. 228, we're well removed from the main pipeline of quality NFL players. That said, there have been a few players drafted at this spot in the last decade who have managed to hang around the NFL for more than a year or two, including one unique story in 2012. Let's take a look at what has been there since 2005:
th overall pick
Positions drafted in last 10 years: 2 LB, 2 RB, 1 DE, 1 DT, 1 DB, 1 C, 1 T, 1 K
Pittsburgh Steelers: Shaun Nua, DE, Brigham Young -- Entering the league at age 24 after his time at BYU, Nua landed on a contending team, and earned a Super Bowl ring in his rookie year. He was with the Steelers until 2007, and had a brief stint with the Buffalo Bills before returning to his alma mater to start coaching.
Kansas City Chiefs: Jarrad Page, DB, UCLA -- Page might be the most successful player drafted at this spot in the past decade. He started all 16 games for the Chiefs in 2008 and 2009, before being placed on injured reserve with a calf injury in 2010. He was dealt to New England in 2010, started five games for the Eagles in 2011 and wound up with the Vikings later that season. He signed a minor-league contract with the San Francisco Giants in 2012, and briefly played Single-A ball in the Giants' organization.
Green Bay Packers: DeShawn Wynn, RB, Florida -- The bowling ball of a running back started four games for the Packers as rookie, carrying 50 times for 203 yards and scoring four touchdowns during Brett Favre's final year in Green Bay. He was lightly used during his next two seasons, and after short runs with both San Francisco and New Orleans, Wynn played briefly in the CFL.
St. Louis Rams: Chris Chamberlain, LB, Tulsa -- His career stretched from 2008 to 2013, and saw Chamberlain start 19 games for the Rams in 2011 and 2012. His best season was 2012, when he made 13 of those starts, intercepted a pass, posted two sacks and recorded a combined 74 tackles.
Detroit Lions: Lydon Murtha, T, Nebraska -- University of Minnesota fans might remember this name; Murtha canceled his commitment to the university following a recruiting trip where players were taken to a strip club and given alcohol. In the NFL, the Hutchinson, Minnesota, native played three seasons, making his only four starts for the Miami Dolphins in 2010.
Cincinnati Bengals: Reggie Stephens, C, Iowa State -- He was cut at the end of his second training camp with the Bengals, and would spend time in Chicago and Buffalo before landing on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad -- and earning a Super Bowl ring -- in 2013.
St. Louis Rams: Jabara Williams, LB, Stephen F. Austin -- His only NFL action came in a combined seven games for the Rams and Bears in 2011. Williams returned to the Rams' practice squad in 2012, and wound up on the Cowboys' practice squad last year.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Jeris Pendleton, DT, Ashland -- One of three players ever to be drafted from his school, and the first since 1977, Pendleton entered the league at age 29 after losing his scholarship at Michigan State and working for six years before walking on at Joliet Junior College in 2008. He played four games with the Jaguars in 2012, and played one game for the Colts in 2013. He was on Indianapolis' practice squad last season.
Washington Redskins: Jawan Jamison, RB, Rutgers -- The 5-foot-8 running back was released at the end of training camp and signed to the Redskins' practice squad in 2013. He was added to the active roster in December, before being released in the offseason, and spent 10 days in the Steelers' camp last year before being released.
Washington Redskins: Zach Hocker, K, Arkansas -- After going through the Redskins' summer program and training camp, Hocker was released during final roster cuts before the start of last season.
