Dolphins defense gets happy returns with Chris Culliver, Earl Mitchell

DAVIE, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins defense will get an injection of fresh legs on Sunday. Cornerback Chris Culliver and defensive tackle Earl Mitchell -- two veterans with plenty of experience -- will make their season debuts on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.

Both players are recovering from significant injuries and were added to the active roster this week. Culliver had reconstructive knee surgery in the offseason and was activated from the physically unable to perform list. Mitchell had a calf injury and is expected to return from injured reserve.

Each player considers himself at or near 100 percent, which is a big plus this late in the season. Both are expected to come off the bench against San Diego.

"You have guys playing about 70 plays, [now] you cut that to 50 or 40 plays and guys get fresher," Culliver said of helping. "They get busy. You got guys rotating in well, and I know coach is doing his job in doing that, and it brings a good dynamic to the game."

Miami's defense can use the added depth. The group is ranked 17th in total defense, 30th against the run and eighth against the pass.

Culliver, who has missed nearly 11 months, joins a secondary that was hit early with injuries. Rookie starter Xavien Howard has been out since Week 4 with a knee injury. Pro Bowl safety Reshad Jones also is done for the season with a shoulder injury. Culliver has a wealth of experience, including starting in the Super Bowl, and can help in the slot and on the perimeter.

Mitchell rehabbed his calf during the summer, played in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks and re-injured himself. He missed the following seven games before being healthy and eligible to play again this week. Mitchell said this is the longest stretch he has been out in his pro career.

"It’s been rough," Mitchell said. "As a veteran, you obviously want to play. So that’s just the nature of the game, injuries and getting hurt."

The Dolphins (4-4) enter the midseason at .500 and a chance to start fresh. The fresh legs on defense can't hurt.
