GLENDALE, Ariz. – Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he intends to pay a hospital visit to the Milwaukee Brewers’ Rymer Liriano, who was hit in the face by a fastball Sunday from the Dodgers’ Matt West.
“I’ve known Rymer when he was with the Padres as a young kid,” Roberts said. “So I’m going to go visit him.”
The incident took place during the eighth inning of the Dodgers’ split-squad game in Phoenix against the Brewers. At the time, Roberts was managing the Dodgers’ other game at Glendale against the San Diego Padres.
West’s high and tight fastball appeared to connect with Liriano on the left cheekbone, just under his eye. Liriano reportedly suffered multiple facial fractures and has been hospitalized ever since.
“It’s definitely something you never want to do, especially when guys are trying to potentially make a team,” West said Monday morning. “It happens, but you definitely don’t want it to happen.”
West, who was a position player before he was drafted, said he has taken a pitch to the face as well, but did not suffer any facial fractures. He believes it was the second time as a pitcher that a fastball has gotten away from him and hit somebody in the face.
“As I walked off the field, I talked to the third-base coach and said ‘Sorry,’” West said. “He said there was nothing you can do about it.”
Roberts called it one of the scariest things that can happen in baseball.
“We’ve all seen things, whether it be the batter, the pitcher,” Roberts said. “Mike Cameron and Carlos Beltran (colliding) in Petco Park. We’ve all seen it, and it’s scary and it’s unfortunate. You feel for the player and his family. It’s unfortunate for sure.”
