Rams still lacking elite receiving option but unlikely to find one in draft

The NFL draft begins April 28 and the Los Angeles Rams hold five picks. For the next week and a half, we'll take a look at a different position every day with what the Rams have in place, what they need, and when they might address it.

We continue the countdown with a look at this year's crop of wide receivers.

In place: Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin, Brian Quick, Bradley Marquez, Kain Colter, Isaiah Ferguson, Nick Toon, Stedman Bailey

What's needed: It hzs become a popular refrain since the end of Torry Holt's heyday circa 2007 but here it is again: The Rams still need to find a true No. 1 receiving option in order to have the balanced offense they need to take some of the pressure off running back Todd Gurley. Britt has been a solid if unspectacular addition since the Rams signed him in 2014, leading the team in receiving each of the past two years. Still, Britt's biggest output was the 748 receiving yards he had in 2014. Austin finally offered some of the multi-purpose potential he'd flashed previously in bigger doses in 2015 but is still best deployed as a runner and gadget receiver rather than a pure outside wideout or even slot receiver. Quick is back for another go after struggling to bounce back from a serious shoulder injury last year. Bailey's status is unknown after he was shot twice in the head on Nov. 24. Marquez looked the part of a special teams dynamo and showed some potential in the slot, so perhaps his role could expand in 2016. After that, Colter, Ferguson and Toon are likely camp bodies. To be fair, this receiving corps hasn't exactly had much help from its quarterbacks but with the Rams set to take a signal-caller No. 1 overall, finding as much help as possible at receiver would be a good way to help whoever that quarterback is.

Verdict: With no picks until two fourth-round choices, the Rams don't exactly have the capital to land a top wideout in this year's draft, not that there's a surefire star like Julio Jones or A.J. Green available anyway. Although this year's receiver crop lacks star power, there might be enough depth to at least get the Rams another serviceable wideout who could offer at least some value. Some names to keep in mind for early on day three could include Colorado State's Rashard Higgins, TCU's Kolby Lisenbee, UCLA's Jordan Payton and Thomas Duarte and Georgia's Malcolm Mitchell. While it's unlikely any of them would fit the bill as the elite receiver the Rams need, it's also worth keeping an eye on the trade market. The Rams might need to get creative to find a top receiver and though teams that have them don't look to trade them, especially for late-round picks, it has happened. Just last year, the Jets traded a fifth-round pick to Chicago for Brandon Marshall and a seventh-round choice. Should an opportunity like that arise again, the Rams would be wise to jump on it.
