ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Oakland Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr, who left the Sept. 28 loss to the Miami Dolphins in the third quarter with ankle and knee injuries, practiced Monday as the team starts the era of interim coach Tony Sparano.
Carr looked unencumbered during the window the practice was open to media members Monday. Carr said after the loss in London that he had a high ankle sprain and a sprained MCL. He said he thought he’d be ready for the Oct. 12 game against San Diego at home. Oakland is 0-4 and fired coach Dennis Allen last Monday.
Unless there is a setback, the second-round picks appears on track to play. It was the first practice for backup quarterback Matt Schaub since Sept. 19. He has been away from the team to attend to a family issue.
Update: Interim coach Tony Sparano said this about Carr after practice: “We had him limited today, we don’t need him to be full-go today, but he’s been progressing nicely. We’ll see where we are as we get going here during the week.”
Oakland’s linebackers issues still appear dire. Starting weakside linebacker Sio Moore worked on the side. He has been out for the last two games. Middle linebacker Nick Roach was not on the field Monday. He has not been cleared for full contact since an Aug. 22 concussion. Backup Kaluka Maiava was also not present. Neither were fullback Marcel Reece and guard Khalif Barnes when the media was present. Monday’s practice was an extra session for Oakland, since it is coming off their bye week.
Oakland has 52 players on its roster and is expected to add another. They reportedly claimed wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins from the New England Patriots.
