ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- It was a difficult Sunday for Kansas City Chiefs kicker Cairo Santos, who can take solace in the fact this particularly Sunday happened in August at training camp and not in the fall at Arrowhead Stadium or another regular-season NFL venue.
Santos missed a number of kicks, including an extra-point from the new distance of 33 yards. But Santos later redeemed himself by hitting a 64-yard field goal try in a drill designed for him to miss because the Chiefs were hoping to work on their coverage.
"Today wasn't a great day," special teams coordinator Dave Toub said. "I'm sure he'd like to have a couple of those back. He missed an extra-point today, and that's uncalled for. He's got to approach the extra points like a field goal. You don't just get up there and tap it through like you used to with an extra point. Those are things we're still working through."
Santos overcame a slow start as a rookie last season to make 25 of 30 field goal attempts, or about 83 percent. But the Chiefs are breaking in a new long snapper this season. They are in the process of choosing between James Winchester and Andrew East.
"There's a happy medium in there," Toub said of Santos. "I think his leg is stronger right now. We just have to settle him down and get him focused more. It's more mental than anything right now."
