Chiefs can use more players at several positions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs took a roster of 75 players into the offseason workouts that began at their practice facility on Monday. That total includes linebacker Justin Houston, who is the franchise player and has yet to sign.

The Chiefs are allowed 90 players under contract at this time of year, so they have room for their 10 draft picks plus a few more players. The Chiefs could always create more room on their roster by cutting one or more current players. They did that last week when they cut Brandon Hartson, one of their three deep snappers.

Here's a look at how their roster breaks down with regard to numbers at each position:

Quarterbacks (5): One, Tyler Bray, is rehabbing from a torn ACL and is unlikely to be available when training camp begins. Still, four quarterbacks are enough to get through the offseason and training camp.

Running backs (7): The Chiefs could use at least one more back to help keep Jamaal Charles fresh. They'll probably add more than one.

Wide receivers (9): The Chiefs not only need bodies here but players. They need at least three more to get through training camp, which can burn up the legs of receivers. But there's at least one and possibly more who aren't on the roster now but will be when the season begins.

Tight end (5): They certainly could get through a camp with five but will probably acquire one more.

Offensive line (12): The Chiefs have room for at least two or three more players here.

Defensive line (9): The Chiefs are close to having what they need for camp so there's not a huge need. That doesn't mean the Chiefs won't draft a lineman.

Linebacker (10): This total counts Houston, so until he's in camp the Chiefs are short two or three bodies for what they need.

Defensive back (14): This sounds like a lot but last year they brought 17 defensive backs, more players than at any other position group, to camp. There's plenty of work for that number of defensive backs to stay busy.

Specialists (4): The Chiefs have a punter, a kicker and two long snappers. That's plenty if they have the right ones.
